About
Some of my most cherished childhood memories are from the time's spent in my grandmother’s kitchen rolling what my family called “fingers,” or the balls of dough to make kieflies, an Italian cookie.
My grandmother says I’m the one who has the real trick of rolling the fingers. I have been a La Porte resident for the past 20 years. It’s been a tradition watching her and helping her over the years. I’ve been rolling those balls for as long as I can remember.
Growing up as part of a large Italian family in Palos Hills, Illinois, I spent a lot of time by my grandmother’s side. She was known as the Cookie Lady for her expertise in making the baked goods from her homeland, Helen Galatte, or “Nany” to me, is a native of the Calabria region of Italy. She is now 98 and the inspiration behind my recent endeavor: Della Nonna’s Cookies.
